State clearly that you expect homework to be completed.

  • A) Don’t assume children know.
  • B) State homework is a top priority.
  • C) Explain how you want it done.

Set up a daily homework time.

  • A) Get your child in the habit of doing their homework at a regularly scheduled time.
  • B) If homework is a top priority it should be scheduled.
  • C) Set up a time with your child that will be the same time and place every day.

Check to see that your child is doing homework.

  • A) A parent must monitor to help the child stay on track.
  • B) A parent must also check that homework is done.

Provide positive support.

  • A) When your child is doing their homework, recognize it!
  • B) Don’t take it for granted that your child does their homework.

Back up your words with actions.

  • A) Begging and pleading do not work.
  • B) Give your child a CHOICE, explain that homework is a top responsibility. You must meet your responsibilities before you receive privileges. “If you choose not to do your homework, you choose not to have privileges.”

Work with the teacher.

  • A) Stay in touch with the teacher via agenda book and\or phone calls.
  • B) Teamwork is the best approach.
