Study Skills & Homework Help for Parents

State clearly that you expect homework to be completed.

  • Don’t assume children know.
  • State homework is a top priority.
  • Explain how you want it done.

Set up a daily homework time.

  • Get your child in the habit of doing their homework at a regularly scheduled time.
  • If homework is a top priority it should be scheduled.
  • Set up a time with your child that will be the same time and place every day.
  • Use first, then statements

Check to see that your child is doing homework.

  • A parent must monitor to help the child stay on track.
  • A parent must also check that homework is done.

Provide positive support.

  • When your child is doing their homework, recognize it.
  • Don’t take it for granted that your child does their homework.

Back up your words with actions.

  • Begging and pleading do not work.
  • Give your child a CHOICE, explain that homework is a top responsibility. You must meet your responsibilities before you receive privileges. “If you choose not to do your homework, you choose not to have privileges.”

Work with the teacher.

  • Teamwork is the best approach.
