Developmental Counselors

Middle School Students’ Needs

Middle schoolers are in a unique stage of rapid growth and self-discovery. They are curious, eager to explore new interests, sensitive to feedback, and rely heavily on peers for validation and support. As they shift toward greater independence, they need guidance to connect their learning to real-life applications while managing social, emotional, and academic challenges.

Role of the School Counselor

School counselors are educators with a mental health perspective who provide leadership and collaboration to support the academic, social/emotional, and career development of all students. We design and deliver a comprehensive counseling program aligned with the school’s mission and ASCA National Model, ensuring every student has the skills to thrive in school and beyond.

Role of a School Psychologist

A school psychologist plays a vital role in supporting students’ academic, social, and emotional development. They conduct psychological and educational assessments to better understand students’ strengths and needs and evaluate eligibility for special education services when appropriate. In addition, school psychologists provide mental health counseling and interventions to help students cope with emotional or behavioral concerns. They work closely with teachers by consulting on effective behavior management strategies and collaborate with school staff to support students who experience learning and behavioral challenges, helping to create a positive and supportive environment.

Services Counselors Provide

  • Guidance Curriculum: Academic skills, study habits, coping strategies, peer relationships, problem-solving, conflict resolution, diversity awareness, and career exploration.
  • Individual Student Planning: Goal-setting, academic and career planning, self-awareness, and transition support.
  • Responsive Services: Individual/small-group counseling, crisis intervention, peer mediation, consultation, and referrals.
